you didn't mention which trim-level you purchased, but they're all inline-4 engines... not v4. Swapping an engine is certainly possible (it always is) but it may not be the most cost-effective route for you.

I would recommend you spend some time at http://www.saabcentral.com/forums/index.php to learn more about your car, and it's performance potential.

here's some performance sites for saab, returned by google :

I definitely wouldnt swap a v6 unless youve gota huge budget. I would get an ecu and supporting parts, especially if its a viggen. With the viggen you shouldnt have any problem getting it above 300 hp, and with a regular 2.0t you can get it to 280 hp for 2000 dollars. There are several tuning sites including www.nordictuning.com and www.maptun.com , and the vendor for nordic in the states is www.genuinesaab.com , maptun is www.group9performance.com
PM me if you have any questions about it, i happen to own a saab myself and will soon be getting an ecu if everything goes right.

is yours the SE or the base model?

if you have the base it's VERY easy and cheap to add 40 hp or so

    i have a 1999 9-3 too :o

    here is your tuning bible:

lots of cheap DIY mods you can do yourself. mod the airbox, remove turbo silencer, you can get a MBC for ~$40 and get some quick HP gains (from ~9psi to ~15psi).

i set up a cardomain page for some of the stuff i did to my 9-3 (1999 SE). when i traded it in i think i had it up to around 220hp. pretty quick with not much $$ invested.

traded it in for an '03 9-5 Aero :naughty:
