S4 handily beats the M3 in the new C&D

    Ok, I was shocked.

The new Car and Driver has a few comparos that are bound to raise some eyebrows.

Notably, the S4 beat out (by a sizeable margin) the M3 and absolutely demolished the C32 AMG in the latest comparo. Sorry, I don't have the text of the article on hand, but basically the editors loved the V8 in the S4 and raved about how turbos are nice but really just aren't as good as big displacement. They talk about how the V8 actually weighs the same as the previous S4's 2.7liter 6 cylinder so the weight penalty is kept to a minimal. The S4 weighs nearly 400 lbs more than the M3 but the S4 was the only car to receive a perfect 10 for the "fun to drive" category.

I haven't read the full article through yet, just the comments on the M3 and the S4.

    I can't afford either, so I don't really care. :(
I prefer the looks of the M3 though.

By the time I'll be able to afford either the new models will be out. :sad2:

But I'd love to have that S4, especially with some aftermarket wheels on it. I honestly like my wheels more than the ones on the new S4.

I don't think I'd buy a new car again. I'd probably buy the new S4 after it's been out two years.

I have a friend who loves Audis, but he says he wouldn't buy a new S4 because it doesn't have turbos. I think he's retarded.

Sounds like a semi-reformed Honda riceboy.

I hate that. People thinking that just because something has forced induction it's instantly superior. My car is turbocharged, and it's slow as hell.

He sorta is, but the funny thing is he isn't really stupid. He has a GTI 1.8T right now and it's actually reasonably quick for what it is...

But I'm still trying to understand how you can dislike a car that's faster than the one it replaces and does it without the turbocharger crutch.

There are a number of S4 peeps that are upset with Audi for dumping the turbos, regardless of whats replacing it. I'll admit I'm very disapointed in Audi's choice as well, but I also realize that if they keep the car as fun to druve as it is now, and add ~90HP to it, I won't be disapointed. :big grin:

Eh, you know how it is... some guys just get it in their heads that turbos are better, regardless of the power made or the reliability.

I mean, if turbos are so great, why don't BMW and Benz use them more often?

I never admitted to driving a high-performance car all the time. I have a fucking truck.

Wait, why am I defending myself? Fuck off, Mini-Andretti.

I read the article.. the thing I didn't understand was that they gave the Audi a "10" on Engine I believe, and gave the M3 a "9" or "8".. but the M3 had outperformed the Audi in acceleration tests.... ?????

the RS6 also beat the M5 handily in that magazine too...

They acknowledge how great the history of the M3 and M5 are but said that someone came along and raised the bar, and that while they have heaped praises on the M's for the past several years someone just came on with something better. :big grin:

 ok, not quite that bad.

your 2.0 liter turbo comment earlier. Just rubbed me the wrong way, the 2.0L turbo platform has proven to be capable of producing good power out of little motors. (ie 4g63, sr20det, 3sgte)

I have been driving an E46 M3 recently, and I've driven an older Audi S4.

I really can't imagine a more fun-to-drive car than the M3. It was very impressive.
