I just got a free iMac G3, 233MHz, nothing special. 4 gig HD, 160Mb of ram, and its got panther.

I'd really like to just use my external HD as a main HD. I just transfered my whole (10+gigs) music library to my external HD.

Can i plug it into the iMac (USB) and just run iTunes off of that?

    Thanks

    Peter

Sure, why not? Just install it to that drive. But, I think you're just trying to accomplish playing music off your external HD if I'm understanding you correctly. If that's the case, just install iTunes to your internal drive and go to preferences and change the location of the music directory to the external drive.

    qft. That's what I do.

Tho it seems to be problematic. If the drive sleeps, or something with the connection hiccups, and you're using it-it'll crash Finder. Repeatedly. Until you shut down the ext. drive.

This could be my drive/kit also.

i have my music (iTunes) and photo's (iPhoto) on a external drive. I can even connect to my iPhoto folder across my wireless network and add photo's.

I run the same way. If the drive was "sleeping" it takes a few seconds to wake up when I start itunes.
