It's hard to go wrong with a Ruger.

Have you considered a CZ75b? They come in 9mm or .40 most of them are around $400.

czs are ultra reliable... i just find they also look ugly due to the smaller slide

Rugers are good guns, I have onwed a couple myself. But I don't really like the triggers on them, try one out for yourself, and see if it works for you.

Rugers are great guns. They are also one of the few lines of firearms that are actually designed to handle +P+ ammo. The CZs have a well-deserved reputation for being good firearms too. Of the two choices, I definitely choose the Ruger because it's built more like a tank versus a CZ, which is more finely built. If the trigger is not what you'd like, a trip to the gunsmith can easily (and a sometimes, cheaply) remedy that. The best thing to do is try out each to see how it fits your hand and shooting preferences.

I have a P89, and I love it. it fires everything I put through it, never jams, I've never had a problem with it, and I've put roughly a thousand rounds through it.
