I am not too familiar with wireless hardware but my family is planning on upgrading our router. We currently have a wireless router that uses G. My friend suggested that i would get better speeds and more range if we switched to a wireless N router. Which according to the box is faster but will it work with the wireless cards we currently own, which are G's

Nope. You'll need Wireless N cards to get the N speeds.

Well, it will work just fine, but it'll be no different than what your currently using. In order to use a N signal, your hardware needs to support it on both ends.

Pretty much all routers/cards are backwards compatible. So a new N router will work with the G and B cards but will be limited in speed/range by the card.
