Makes sense, I guess. Most any high-level wrestler would compete at or near black belt level.
That sort of calls into question the meaning of a black belt, though. Does it mean you can beat (or be competitive with) black belts? Or does it mean you've spent time training in and learning the system?
You cant be a black belt in nogi. IMO to get a black belt you must have also had a white blue purple and brown one.
I agree. Judo is pretty rigid about promotions, but there are provisions for early promotion in exceptional cases. Like people who have wrestling or BJJ experience.
But even those guys still have to meet the requirements for promotion - the time in rank requirements can be waived, but you still have to know the specified techniques, etc, for each level. You can't just go in and say "Hi I'm a BJJ expert!" and jump straight to black belt.
Rashad is not a black belt, does not have black belt level BJJ, nor will he ever have black belt level BJJ.
Rolles gave him his black belt to get hype up since he got a contract with the UFC.. Can you hear Joe Rogan now? "A world class black belt, recently promoted former LHW champion Rashad Evans to black belt. He has world class.... blah blah blah blah...... World class blah blah blah"
Rolles has been training with Rashad for a year.
Even if he can compete with black belts in no-gi bjj (not saying he can) it still doesnt make him a BB.
There are huge athletic D1 wrestlers at the gym who have like 2 months BJJ that give me lots of trouble. It doesnt mean they should be promoted to my rank at BJJ.
i know it's somewhat taboo depending on who you ask, but how difficult is it to get promoted after having switched to a new instructor?
that is, if i'm a purple, switch schools/instructors, would most instructors make me go through purple belt level instruction before getting promoted?
if rashad put a gi on, im pretty sure he would have tons of trouble with a purple belt.
if you're a purple, you're a purple. you start at a new academy - you start at a purple belt. unless your new instructor asks you to start at white (unlikely)
i still dont agree with it
marketing. Just wait till Rashad starts promoting people to BB
some instructors may as you to move down a rank or two as well, not all the way to the bottom too. but like you said, it's not that common
i wanna be a white again.
