rio forge + itunes + pc

Discussion in 'OT Technology' started by johnnywallywallace, Apr 28, 2005.

  1. so my rio forge 512 came today ... I go to add music, and I find that all my itunes stuff is mp4. is there an easy and preferably free piece of software out there to convert down to mp3? everything I found seems to be payware.

You'll need to burn the ITMS tracks to a CD 1st, in CD Audio format, then convert the tracks from CDA back to MP3.
    Use your iTunes software.

there are programs that convert m4a to mp3, but I recommend you avoid them... M4a and Mp3 are both "lossy" codecs, and transcoding between them results in a file that suffers from both formats deficiencies.

  4. doh, was hoping to avoid having to burn and reimport ... SUCK!

don't do it. quality will be worse than the source m4as, which are already worse than the original cds.

If quality loss was such a great issue, probably shouldn't have bought them from iTunes in the first place...

I have found the itunes music store files to be of acceptable quality. Superior to other music stores, at least.

I'm surprised that the iTunes music store files don't come in Apple Lossless format. That would be a better choice.

size would be an issue -- especially considering bandwidth.

I hadn't thought of that, but that does make sense. I'd probably never use the iTunes store, just for that reason - if I'm going to pay for music, I want it to be full quality.

  12. jhymn does the job ... I'll take the loss of quality in my existing m4ps (preserved just in case, and/or for later use, whatever), convert all to mp3, and stop using itunes to purchase my music ...

As do I; it's decent enough if you only want a few particular tracks. If I like most of an album, I go out and purchase the CD itself.

johnny: Convert the M4Ps to MP3s so you can transfer them. I use a rewriteable disc whenever I do this. Then I burn the ITMS tracks in original format on regular CD for safekeeping. I believe you're allowed to burn ITMS tracks up to seven times.
