Been doing sprint work with my coach, and my shins have felt like shit afterwards :hs: I think maybe ive got shin splits or something...

how do they diagnose shin splits? X-rays or just at a doc?

Do toe raises, 3x 12 just a few times a week....stick with it for a few weeks of pain and then it goes away.

yeah i had thought of that - i have orthotics in my shoes because my feet are fucked, and im wondering if the muscles on the front around my shins are just weak and need to catch up with the rest ...

I've had problems with shin splints since I started running 6 years ago :hs:

The best advice I can give in addition to strengthening the muscles in your calves and doing toe raises is to increase the load (running/sprints) slowly to give your legs time to adjust.

To ease the pain, I use ice and take ibuprofin. Ice your shins for about 15-20 minutes immediately after you run to keep the swelling down.

exactly...which is why he should do toe raises, I can't think of a better exercise for shin muscles.

    Shin Splints

Here's a quick way to fix it. The night before fill a paper cup with water and let it freeze. Then, after your run, take the frozzen cup of ice out, rip off like half of the paper cup, and rub it onto your shins - You'll feel a million times better.

well it feels like the bone itself is 'bruised'.. the muscle tissue around the shins doesnt hurt or feel sore like your standard muscle soreness after a workout - it only hurts when i run, or when i touch the bone, but considering i only just started doing sprints/running regularly, and also started using orthotics in my shoes, i have a feeling its just going to take some time to get used to things..

i iced it last night after my session, and its feeling ok - i have a hockey game tonight that should be interesting, i hope it doesnt give me grief for that :x:
