I'd like to eventually get into "long" distance shooting but don't know where to start in terms of a rifle or cartridge. Anyone have any suggestions? What should I look for in a rifle for this application?

.308 would be a good choice since alot of target ammunition and match bullets are available, look for target or varmint style rifles with heavy barrels, target stocks, etc.

    shooting paper?

just about any rifle round will be fine at 300 meters.

.223 is fine lots of people use that for service rifle matches
    30/06 works as well
    .308

Hell I know people that shoot 1000 yrds with 45-110 black powder rifles

Are you looking to shoot competitively? You might need to take into account if you're going to be using some kind of optic or open sights.

Probably not competitively. I would just like to improve my marksmanship by shooting paper targets. I would definitely be using a magnified optic.

i dont own a long range rifle yet but after alot of research, when i do get one its most likely gonna be a remington 700 Police 26" bbl with a Leupold Mark4 scope.

I think thatd be a world class setup for anybody except the most discriminating shooter with a bottomless wallet.

Just get a standard 20" AR-15 from any of the various big name companies like Bushmaster. You don't need anything special so don't waste your money. 300m isn't that far and doesn't require some crazy setup.

A standard AR with some quality ammo is all you need.

an AR varminter with a decent scope will work very well at 300+
If you want bolt actions, Savage or Remmy in just about any caliber will work too. If you are just shooting paper for fun and practice, take into consideration cost of ammo though.

also if you do any kind of hunting shoot from field positions like sitting, kneeling, prone, etc. You don't find many benches in the woods.

    .308
Bolt gun = Rem 700... PSS if you have dough, VS is good too.
MBR = FAL the right arm of the free world!

IMHO .308 has the most predictable bullet drop out to 1000 yards.

One of my coworkers, who is a former Marine, wants me to buy one because he's married and his wife won't let him get one. Knowing that I'm foot loose and fancy-free, he says get a .50BMG w/ an expensive scope before getting hitched.

If I were you(I'll be in the same boat in a few months), I would pick up the Savage 110 in .308. Awesome package from the factory. If you get to the point that you can outshoot the rifle, you can start upgrading.

Although I have seriously contemplated making a scoped K31 as a project......I just can't really find too much on the effective range of the round.

Mind-blowingly tempting but I gotta wait on the .50 ... "normal" rifle and M590A1 are calling my name. I'll pass this along to my co-worker though...he may jump on this since it's cheap.

It's probably for the best since my girlfriend blew a gasket when I told her I was going to buy a rifle and a shotgun. Her reaction was, "Please buy a new car instead"

Maybe somewhere in the .30 range?
    A couple options are .308 and 30-06
Just found 2 ammo boxes of 30-06 in the house :wiggle:
