Sup fellas.....I'm looking at getting a rifle. This will be my first rifle purchase, so far I have only bought some handguns and shotys.

Im looking at something in the 308 or 30-06 area. I am wanting to do some hunting with it and in addition do some target shooting. Was curious if yall could recomend something for me. Not looking for something thats going to break me but I want a decent quality gun.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!! THANKS!

Savage 111, its what i plan to get, great price, good rifle, with a great trigger. Or if you can find a used REmington 700, very upgradable and damn good rifle. that would be another good choice.

both are bolts, which is what i would recommend.

Yes a bolt action is what Im looking for, should have specified.

Ive had people recommend the Remmy 710 and the 700.
Planning on hunting deer and hog to start off with.

The Remingtons are great guns, but I think you can get the savages for less, either way both guns got a fair ammount of aftermarket accessories if you plan to change anything. I would like to do the stock on mine sometime soon.

I have a Remington 700 7mmMag that I use for hunting. Has a little more distance than my other rifles, but still nice dropping power at short distances.

I wouldnt recommend the 710. My buddy got one, and now its going back to remington to get replaced, the scope adjustments were opposite the arrows. The arrows said, turn clockwise to move left, and we had to move counterclockwise. And he had to ram the bolt in to get it to close. Finally, his magazine release broke off, IT BROKE OFF.

but maybe he just got a bum one.

Id second the Savage, cheaper then the 700, unless you find a good used one. I also love the Model 70, but its out of my price range:wtc:

    Any thoughts on a Weatherby?

Yeah I have been reading up on the Remy 710 people either love it or hate it. I dont much care for the color of the stock (blueish grey) Anyway to paint that thing?

Reading up on the Savage rifles now to see what I can find

read a review of hte weatherby vanguard in American Rifleman. Sounded like a great gun, under 1.5in group guarenteed aint bad either. I think the price was pretty good too.

and im sure you could use krylon fusion or something, its made for plastic.

.30 is considered a medium bore, big bores are generally atleast .375 :hsugh:

Personally, I'd go with rem 700 or Winchester Model 70. I've got the rem 710, my dad bought it for me last year as a b-day gift, and it's ok. I haven't had any problems from it yet, but they seem to be hit and miss as far as quality goes. I think I wound up with a decent one.

eh, whatever, it's all nomenclature... compared to a .22 a .308 is bigbore... should've said centerfire but it's still an LTR:cool:

I wouldnt want to carry a semi-heavy barreled, beavertail stocked rifle for deer hunting, even if it is the "light" model.
