I'm really new to guns, so I was thinking of getting a ruger 10/22 to learn with. But I also want to use it for something else. Now please, all you big manly men of the weapons forum, dont laugh, but I want to make it look like a gun from a video game. I figure it's cheap so if I screw it up, it wont really matter.

Basically, I want to modify it so it has a removable stock and surround the barrel with wood, so just a few inches stick out front.

How hard would it be to modify one of those 10/22's to do that? I've heard they have tons of after market parts, so they must be fairly easy to disassemble.

would help if we knew what you wanted to modify it to look like.

I wouldn't personally do anything extreme with it, but it's your rifle, so you'll have to deal with the snickers at the range.

Screw the range for now, got some rural property.

    crappy ass paint representation.

I was thinking of how hard it would be to make a metal and wood shell for it, plus some sort of attachable stock so it wouldn't be so horribly inaccurate.

The problem I'm having is getting good still images to reference it.

It's like the basic weapon issued to the bad guys you mow down, so it never gets any love.

I was thinking of something that I can completely take off when I want it to look like the game version, and a stock that maybe I could stick into the back and screw in.

yes. Federal-level is 30" minimum overall, with a minimum 16" barrel length, iirc. States may have additional restrictions.

Can vary by state, but generally 26" OAL and barrel has to be atleast 16" less then 16" barrel requires you to get a SBR Stamp. ($200)

it might be. I'm certain on the 16" barrel requirement. I though overall was 30" but it may not be.

a brief search of google didn't really return anything concrete. The 16" barrel limitation is confirmed.

As for overall length, I didn't get anything. One site references a 26" minimum overall length for shotguns, but rifles were not specified.

Look for a Manlincher 10-22. It has a wood stock that goes the length of the barrel.

of course... can't count removable muzzle devices or collapsable stocks unless they're in their shortest config... Otherwise you defeat the purpose of the requirement.

even so, my 16" barrel AR-15 is 32" OAL with the stock collapsed. It's 33" with the stock in a comfortable position.
