S&W makes some nice ones, I'd go with something .357 good loads for defense if you want to use it for that and you can use .38 in it for plinking at the range, I'd avoid the light weight models if your going to shoot it alot.

I'm a S&W wheelgun fan. The rest depends on what you want. Like squid says, .357 is a good all-round choice.

I personally have only one wheel gun a S&W 5 shot j-frame in 375 mag and a 2 1/8 barrel as a carry gun. its loads of fun to shoot at least to me, but it is a damn flame thrower too.

generally speaking from physics the heaver the gun the less acceleration it will have from the same force explosion (F = M x A, F stays constant and M increases then A decreases) . Translantion the longer one. Also shorter are more prone to muzzle flip than the longer ones.

S&W is kind of the defacto.

Ruger also makes some really good revolvers that will generally run you a $100-$200 less than a comparable model S&W. They're kind of like ruger auto's... kind of clunky and the ergo's aren't the greatest but built like tanks.

Taurus can be hit and miss from what I've read, but the price is right if you get ahold of a good one.

The other common revolver brand is Rossi, but I really don't know much about them.

    Get a 686+PP, It's a 6" barrel. rugers are alright, but I wouldn't buy one.

Stick to S&W, their revolvers are unparalleled, rivaled only by Colt, in most instances.

Honestly I don't think there's a single S&W I find aesthetically appealing. Hold a moment and I'll go check the website to see if I'm right.

Okay, just checked out their site. The only two guns they have I find appealing are the 1911 and the AR-15, both originally Colt products. :hs:

Edit: Whereas Ruger has some beautiful shotguns, although I can't say their pistols do much for me. I have a Super Blackhawk which I enjoy, and I find their Redhawk & GP100 to be significantly more attractive than their S&W counterparts.

That said, Dan Wesson makes a fine revolver. :hs:

 I didn't say I'd turn away from a screamin' deal on one, I just think Ruger (revolvers) look better. Pistols it's a draw. (Pun intended.)

    .

Ergonomics on mine are acceptable, not stellar. Also second the "built like tanks" part. If I felt the need to engage in some pistol-whipping, I could do far worse than my 4" GP100.

Sort of wish I'd spent a few more bucks and gotten one in matte stainless, but at least I can settle for evil black.

I think Bill Ruger is on record saying something like "no honest man needs a gun with a magazine that holds more than ten rounds" and has supported some of the gun control legislation out there. This was some decades ago.

Just a guess. Thunderbear will have to elaborate further.

bill ruger campaigns for gun control

notice that his site only shows 5 round mags for the mini-14

most of the reviews of the mini-14 i've seen always complain about the lack of 20/30 round *STANDARD* capacity magazines

Bill has made it known he only wants to sell 20/30 rounders to LEOs.

    Boycotting his products is understandable.
