I have decided on a S&W 686 as a home defense pistol (have a Ruger LCP for carry).

The offer it in a 6-shot and 7-shot. What is the downside to going with the 7? Is it any more prone to malfunction?

    Thanks :)

The only problem with the 686 7 shot for home defense is it isn't an 870/500 with 00 buck.

Getting that too (the 500). I still think a pistol is the most efficient for a surprise in the middle of the night -- the shotgun is more for shit like riots, societal breakdown, etc.

Never heard of any issues with 6 vs 7 shot revolvers, especially not from S&W.

In a HD role, you don't need to worry as much about fitting a holster, so I'd definitely say go for the extra round.

    S&W 500 revolver for HD...

even if you miss the muzzle flash will blind the intruder and the concussion will make everyone deaf

Just racking the slide on a shotgun is enough to scare any would be burglar off.
