Retired officer accidentally fires rifle, floods apartment
    Updated 10:23 a.m., August 5, 2008

FORT PIERCE — A retired Riviera Beach Police officer working in his personal gun shop Monday accidentally discharged a rifle, causing a bullet to strike a water line and flood his apartment, according to a police report.

The bullet did not leave 67-year-old Robert S. Myers’ apartment, and no one was injured, according to the Fort Pierce Police Department report.

The Treasure Cay Drive resident told police he recently purchased an AR-15 rifle and was installing an optical sight on it about 8:30 p.m. Monday in the spare bedroom he converted into a gun shop, according to the report. Myers said he thought he inserted an empty magazine into the rifle, but he instead picked a magazine containing 10 rounds of .223 caliber ammunition. The rifle accidentally discharged, sending a bullet north through a closet, through some drywall, through a bathroom, through the kitchen and into the kitchen wall where it struck a water line for the apartment’s sprinkler system.

Between three and four inches of water flooded Myers’ apartment before firefighters could shut off the line, according to the report. The apartment is surrounded by concrete fire walls and no other homes were damaged.

Officers instructed Myers on proper gun safety but did not arrest the 25-year police veteran, according to the report.

Why do you need a magazine in your gun to put an optic on? :nono:
