Two burglars chose the wrong house to invade when they broke into an Inwood home early Sunday morning. They were greeted by the resident who opened fire on them with his AK-47-style assault rifle, Nassau police said.

It was 5:32 a.m. Sunday when the male resident, 36, "heard suspicious noises coming from the front door of his home, and armed himself with a Romanian SAR-1 rifle," a variant of the Soviet AK-47 assault weapon, a police report said.

The two men "broke through the front door and were confronted by the victim, who shot four times toward the subjects," the police report said.

The burglars ran off, apparently uninjured, and four rifle shell casings were later found at the house, police said.

One of the men appeared to have been carrying a knife, the resident reported.

    Fourth Squad detectives are investigating.

I'm suprised he isn't up on any charges yet.

Wouldn't need to aim if it was 10mm or birdshot

Heavily populated area right on the Queens border, I could easily see charges for discharging there, along with possibly some sort of endangerment charges. This is NY criminals have more rights then the victims.

The fact that it's even possible for this guy to be charged sickens me. How does punishing a man for defending his home improve society?

very fucked up. there should be a god damn zero tolerance law in the US. if on any part of US soil, an intruder is breaking in to your house... you should have the right to exercise deadly force on him with 0 legal implications.

i don't care if he has a mini-gun or a plastic fork. he broke in to your house /story

I'm just glad that I live in "real America", in which things like a castle law exists... It is a shame that the crooks got away to rob and pillage another day...

How dare they say AKs have no sporting purpose. This purpose seemed quite sporting to me!

He wouldn't have fired an AR because it would have jammed. He didn't have time to clean it before they ran. :mamoru:

If he couldn't hit someone with an AK from across a room, what makes you think he could have with an AR? :ugh:
