it can be depending on where you purchase.

Its plenty if you dont mind used. I got a JL 500/1 amp for 200 and a JL 12" W6 for 175 (well in process of acquiring lol). Those are fairly high end car audio too. Loud but also built for audiophile quality sound.

Depends what you plan on getting out of the system.

Are you installing it or paying a shop?

    plan on installing myself...

    can't be that hard....

already have a kenwood kvt-617... that should ease the installation slightly...
this is for a 2004 Lancer Evolution... no SSL... just regular 6 speaker setup...

thanks for the input so far guys... the more input the better...

JRock10: suggestions on where/what to purchase?
Keiffer87: not too much... of course saying "decent bass" doesn't really say anything as that is relative... i'm open for suggestions on what i can get out of a 500 budget.

man, you can find "party paks" at all the big box stores. some kind of cheaper amp/sub combo. I know at my shop we're running the DEI/Orion West Coast Customs Box for $269 and it has every damn thing you need in it (yes including the wiring). I think it's a 400 watt amp and 2 12's in a sealed enclosure that isn't the best thing on the block by far, but it's pretty decent for the money.

    edit: it's ported @ $299. here's a link to our box http://www.electronicexpress.com/product?prod_id=11850

    I would recommend:

Spend around $250 on a couple of 12'' subs in a sealed box. New or Used.
Then I would spend $220 on a good amp that does 500W RMS or so.
    Then $30 on wiring.

The power rating for the amp would obviously need to change some to reflect the sub purchase. I would consider Alpine Type-R, JL 12w3, older RE for subs.
