    EDIT: 70-200. :uh:

i know it has some switches on it, but don't have any clue what they're for (never used one). I assume one turns IS on and off, but that's about it.

have our familiy golf outing on sunday, and a surprise bday party for my dad's 60th on Saturday. Should be a good time, and want to make sure i get a nice lens for it.

local joint is renting it for $60 from Fri-Mon. Not too bad. i would have used rentglass.com, but it was $80 shipped for the week. i don't need it more than 2 days.

AF is auto focus on, MF is auto focus off.

    it's all pretty self explainitory

IS mode 1 is for normal pictures, 2 is for panning, that's about it really

    wtf is a 70-22?

    AF - on/off
focus limitor - if your subjects are all far away, keep it on the great distance so it doesn't have to hunt in the close focus distance range

    IS - on/off
    IS mode

use the tripod mount on the lens, not the camera if you use a tripod

    yikes. 70-200.

the IS mode is if you either want it completely off, completely on, or just on for the vertical plane (if you're panning horizontally)?

on/off completely. its pretty much standard to just leave it on at all times. some might say at high high shutter speeds its ok to turn off, but it really doesn't negatively effect it so might as well just leave it on.

what you're thinking of is the IS Mode button at the bottom, 1 is standard 2 is panning

There's one more switch: 1.4m/2.4m which just sets the minimum focusing distance. If you are shooting at stuff beyond 2.4 meters away (about 10 feet) then leave it in the 2.4m position, it will minimize focus hunting and reduce AF time.
