Is there any downside to renaming it? I hate it looking at me with that ugly name.

DUDE, renaming HD's can cause several things to not function anymore and CAN cause issues, but "I" did not have any problems.

Since no one has told the original poster how to actually do it...

Right click the HD image, then go to get info. Then name/extension, and change the name.

If thats too hard, you can just double click on the HD text on the desktop and leave your cursor over the text, it'll let you edit it.

or select the drive and press enter.

Renaming drives in Windows can be a problem, not in OSX, though...

Renaming the computer can cause problems, not the HD.
