They're releasing a 597 VTR, which is basically a 597 with a free-floated M4 handgaurd, pistol grip, rail on receiver, and your choice of 6 position collapsible or fixed buttstock. I don't know how they're going to justify a near $500 MSRP when there are so many better options out there (M&P 15-22, SIG522, GSG-5).

There are a few upsides though compared to those other rifles. Magazines will be a lot cheaper and easier to find. You can buy 597 mags anywhere you can buy 10/22 mags. It's not covered in Real Tree like the R-25 and R-15 VTRs. And Volaquartsen makes a hammer and extractor that greatly improve the running of the rifle.

Of course, most people will say, "Just buy a 10/22 and tacticool stock", but choice is what makes the world go 'round. :dunno:

Did they ever actually *fix* those pieces of shit?

I have one that sits in the back of my safe, after having it go full auto and dump mags, FTF/FTE, stovepipe everything, and finally fire out of battery damn near burning my eyes out. Went back to Remington once, and I tried every trick RFC had to offer at the time.

Fuck that gun, and fuck whoever designed it.

Early or late model? I've heard that the late model ones ran better, which just pisses me off even more.

The later models came with a slightly different magazine design that fixed most of the feeding problems. A lot of problems with the older rifles can be fixed with a new mag.

My dad's got a 597 chambered in .17HMR that works 'ok'. The main issue being, you can't load the 7 round mags with more than 5 rounds or it has a bunch of feeding issues.

I tried the new mags in mine when I had it, to no avail. Tried fiddling around with tightness on the rails, and all that jazz.

Another 10/22 solved my 597 problems.

  10. It looks like a 10/22 with one of those ghastly AR conversion kits.

    Pretty much.

It's tempting though. I already own a 597 and a bunch of magazines. I could sell my GSG-5 and have enough to buy the VTR and a cheapo red dot. It's also a bonus that I can buy 2 30 round 597 magazines for the same price as one GSG-5 magazine. As much as I love my GSG-5, this could easily be my new fun gun.

I used to have a similar looking tacticool 10/22, and I sold it off pretty quickly because of the aesthetics... ironically.

Succinctly put, the thin magazines kill the beauty of the rifle.
