20" tactical model. Shooting 300 yards regularly, 600 occasionaly. I know .223 makes more economic sense, but for some reason I want a .308 :o

Not reloading yet, but I'll get into it within a year probably.

This will be for punching paper, but I wouldnt mind if I could hunt deer with it eventually :dunno:

    Also open to other models.

    .308 if you're hunting deer with a VX-III

This, or even a less expensive vari-x. 4-12x40 should put you in pretty good shape

Cheap ammo is well... cheap. It will work for range fodder of course, but you will notice the limitations quickly when you start increasing range. 223 will be worse than a 308 at 600yds if you aren't taking advantage of the better 224 bullets.

In short, buy a press. Even if it's a single-stage. Seriously.

As for optics, how much you wanting to spend?

I like Leupies, even if they are the cool thing to hate on (and perhaps rightfully so in some regards).

You could score a used VX-III and add custom shop M1 knobs for that kinda dough. (which is usually what I do when I need some GP class for that kinda $$) I like the 3.5x10x40's, but you could trade some friendliness for higher zoom if that's your thing and go with the 4.5x14 model. Skip the AO's and 50mm bells if you can.

Could take a chance on some of the newer stuff, but I don't have any experience with them so I dunno. The Falcon Menace seems to get good reviews, but it's fucking huge (which may/may not be a concern to you). The WOTAC scope supposedly is kinda neat, and stupid cheap. There's always the SS 10x (or the new 3-9 variable) as well.

Regardless, now is the time to take advantage of someone else's poor decisions/misfortune and snag some good glass on the cheap. I'd watch the SH classifieds like a hawk, and set up some searches via RiverOfGuns if it were me.
