Honestly, at that price point you would easily spend more money replacing the head unit than fixing it if anything went wrong. I had a Clarion in my truck that the display went out on so I replaced it with a far more expensive Eclipse that, unless my amps have detonated simultaneously, went to it's maker far before it's time.

It's a roll of the dice with electronics. Both Kenwood and Clarion are established companies. Pick the one with the features you like best.

:slap: idiot. alpine isn't the be-all end-all to car audio.

OP, if you're looking at a $79 price point, how about this one:

    http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=18558

MP3 and comes with a remote. also, you get the kenwood, which takes care of your reliability question. not that clarion is a bad unit, but kenwood is a wider known brand.

if he wants a GOOD unit that is also RELIABLE then I say Alpine, as well.

Otherwise, I would take kenwood over clarion.

IMO... from my expirences as an installer, for a 30 year old company.

headunit brands you can't go wrong with:
    Alpine
    Pioneer
    Panasonic
Clarion(though i think they're put a lot of effort into making them ugly.)

brands people like, that i've seen too many failures for myself to consider... but you might do good with:
    Eclipse
    Kenwood
    JVC
    Blaupunkt

    brands to stay away from:
    Sony
    Dual
    Durabrand
    VR3
    Jensen(and all their cousin's)

:wtc: Damned thing sounded so good. I'm still puzzled by it. It just started dropping channels randomly and finally went out altogether. The controls still work but the sound is gone expect for some warbling in the sub channel.

i bet you're saying that from all of the ribbon cable failures on the old d-mask units.

I've never had any trouble with the 2 pioneer units I have had (different vehicles).

no, no i'm not... that was a bad issue, but pioneer even had a ribbon issue... i'm talking about the fact, i rarely see a working kenwood in a car.

I admit that kenwood is not nearly the best for car audio, but to say that you "hardly see one working" is simply ignorant.

i dunno, I'm a huge excelon fan. most every kenwood i've ever done has never had a problem. i think of the 300 or so that i sold, i had about 4 come back. 2 ribbons, jammed cd mech, and 44 cents worth of extra accessories (kids)

typically when i see a kenwood headunit... it either doesn't play cd's, or it doesn't eject them... and looking at people's receipts, they seem to make it just out of warranty before they die(though a customer around christmas went through 3 bad out of the box units, before he had enough and bought an alpine from us.)... cd units should last 3 to 5 years, not die just after a year.

my few experiences with kenwood have all lasted many years. Everyone I know with kenwood units seem to like them. They sound decent. Overall it's a good unit.

I already said I would take an Alpine first..... but I have a chevy s10 4x4 that sees a great deal of abuse and it's kenwood head unit is approx 8 years old and going strong -- even with very violent vibrations from BLM roads.

My eXcelon unit worked great for years. It kept working even when I gave it to a friend, until it got stolen 2 days after he put it in his car.
    Stay away from JVC!!! POS

I think my unit is going on its 3rd year. :dunno:

I've seen plenty of kenwood units that last, but I dont install for a living. :)

I have a ~6-7 year old Rockford Fosgate 8350. Very solid receiver will fantastic specs for it's time. It's too bad RF went down hill and stopped making them.

Panasonics are good in the low-end market

delco made the first versions, and then hyundai(makes most of the mid to higher end eclipse, while jvc makes the entry level eclipse.) made the later... in the 90's Nak's were made by sony, but that was back when sony didn't suck... we carried denon back in the tape deck days, and they were the most expensive you could get... and all of them broke.
