Masked 2009/2010 Ford Mustang engineering car in Michigan. The refresh is believed to be heavily influenced by the Italian Giugiaro Mustang concept Ford showed ain 2007.

Redesigning retro cars is the worst idea ever.

if anything they are bringing it towards a contemporary design.

Making cars that look nothing like the originals is the worst idea ever. Cars like the Mustang and Mini can keep their signature shapes and talented stylists can always keep them fresh.

If it looks anything like the front of that concept it is going to be tough.

But the current Mustang and the new Camaro are needlessly retro.

Holden manages to keep commodore cues in every new model, yet make the shape look modern.

Not everything needs to be a throwback to the 60's.

No they aren't. Neither has looked anything like the legendary and timeless originals for decades, they've visibly lost the passion. There's a reason people still restore and covet the originals after all these years and it isn't because the follow-up models were good. They lost the breathtaking looks that made those cars icons. It's about time these names went back to their heritage and became real again.

Like the Mini, HUMMER, Ford GT, Fiat 500, Jeep and other cars, they simply can't look like anything else.

i agree, but the originals were so famous and loved, because they were something different from the norm. Instead of evolving into something special, these new models have thought "we've lost the plot, lets just copy the 40 year old car" and done just that.

I mean look at the new Camaro's interior, its not a modern classy design, its a retro gimmick, just like the rest of the car.

Why can't they carry over timeless cues without being needlessly retro, see the new Jaguar cars, they done a very good job of that.

I think American manufacturers should work more on improving their interiors before anything else.

    Cheap plastic = fail.

This is how an interior on a modern day american ford should look like:

The front is okay, but the taillights are hideous.

The problem is they will be forced to repeat history. The new mustang will eventually end up looking something like a Pinto.
