I hope you didn't already install all that. If so, you should reformat again.

What are you you using the machine for??

Everyone uses different programs for what they do, so it's not too easy to ask someone else what YOU need.

IMO, SP2 and maybe Microsoft Antispyware should be fine.

A decent free, resident, anti spyware program to get is Spybot search and destroy.
Ad aware is good, but if you want the resident version, then you gotta pay for it.

I do not recommend the "resident" scanning functions. I do use Spybot S&D, but I do not enable TeaTimer, or any of the other "resident" functions.

So far, I have found no spyware solution that gets everything... so I recommend a combination of Spybot S&D, Adaware, and MS Anti-spyware.

Get rid of norton in favor of AVG. MUCH lighter on the system resources, faster scans, and BETTER detection/cleaning.

I use resident Spybot, but not the teatimer, but then I don't use IE anyway.
However I use the resident feature that stops registry entry changes, as my family uses my backup PC, so I like to protect it as much as possible.

Is the MS anti-spyware any good? I've never tried that.
And agreed, get rid of Norton, it's a resource hog.

Pretty good. I think those are the top-3, and you should use at least 2 of them.

www.amazon.com, www.bestbuy.com, www.newegg.com, www.froogle.com are all good sites to find products to ACTUALLY PAY FOR!

search this forum for MANY MANY reasons why not to use norton. AVG > norton.

Nero > roxio... by a LOT.

Or free.grisoft.com if you can't find a link to the free version on the main page since they redesigned the site.

Something I found out about ms-antispyware.
Since MS bought Gator, their spyeware checker does not pick up Gator as spyware.

It does spot it and pick it up, but the default action to it is "ignore" ... so i've read.

Totally agree here, get rid of Norton and use AVG as suggested, or NOD32.
Bit Lord is far better than Comet for torrent goodness.
Limewire is only decent if you get the Pro version that doesnt include spyware.
Roxio was good, about 5+ years ago, now Nero is the burning app.

Like I said above, we can't tell YOU what programs to use.

If you like a program that someone else thinks is shit, who cares?

I can't recommend Norton enough and I use the Corporate version. I use Roxio and will pick it any day over Nero.

All these programs are personal preference for you.

I can't tell you how many systems I've fixed simply by uninstalling Norton products. It gets its tentacles into too many parts of windows and screws everything up. Ditto on McCrappy. Easy CD Creator was the only program to routinely blue screen my old computer running Win2000. I've seen it fuck up many other computers too.
