So like the title says, I'll be shooting this event for Transowlorld MX.

I'm totally stoked. It's at the Santa Monica Pier and it starts around 7 and Ronnie Renner will start jumping at 8ish.

Now, Here's my question. I'll get all the PJ type shots early and I'm not too worried about that. I'm bringing my tripod to get some long exposure shots and whatever else.

I'm wanting to shoot a sequence shot like this:

So, this is where I get confused. Will I be able to luck out, and have enough ambient light to pull off a semi fast shutter speed to do the sequence? or will I have to bust out my 580EXII ?

If I'll have to use my flash, is there a way I can have it continuously fire for 12-15 shots?

    I'll be using this setup:

    1DIIN
    70-200 2.8L IS
    17-40L
    580EXII

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks.

can't help ya with what you got, but getting a flash to fire that fast, that often and that strong is gonna be damn near impossible.

I say you try it out with ambient and a reaaaly fast iso.

Looking at the detail in the shot you posted (which is awesome, btw) the iso is cranked the F up there too.

On a side note, I know the sb800 can fire on 'repeat', so it's like a strobe light, but I think that would be too fast and not enough power.

If I were you, i would get 2 powerful flashes. Like photogenic 1000 watts.

And you can easily make that happen. Other wise 580 won't do anything.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I'm hoping the lighting there will be good enough so I wont have to worry about using my flash. I'm kinda nervous! :noes:

    :o

Hold on, let me go spend $1400 on some studio lights that I couldn't possibly use that this event... :hsugh:

I already have powerful strobes, I'm just wondering if the 580 would work.

look at your 580 manual.. I remember seeing something in there about firing continuously for like 20 shots and a warning saying not to do more than that or you could melt something or something like that

unless you're much closer to the action than that picture is, your 580 isn't gonna do much for you. If anything it'll just make the light look gross as you'll get nasty reflections on things.

    Could rent them...

If you do have powerful strobes then what the problem. Take them with you, if there is enough ambient light then good, if not use 'em.

I'll take a picture tomorrow and show you why they wouldnt work. I dont have a power pack, and I'm sure as hell not using extension cords. Shit, they wouldnt even allow them

with a cpe4 you can get up to 12-15 full power flashes consecutively. depending how far away you are, you can prob use that off camera on the other side, and use high iso, to make it brighter. It could work.

Ambient light won't have the power you need. Your 580EX can do this kind of shot (read your manual-set it to "multiple") but you're gonna have to be a lot closer to the subject.

I'd look into renting some powerful battery operated strobes if you're really serious about pulling this off. Then take them home and practice with them before the event.

Why cant you just fire off 20 exposures on a tripod and merge them in photoshop?

may not have the shutter speed and ambient light to pull of sharp images.

So I found out tonight, That I really fucking need a 24-70L...

and my media access to the event was basically this:

Top three photographers in the motocross industry got red wrist bands to go anywhere and everywhere. Lucky Bastards.

I got a black one along with 40 other people

The 40 of us were crammed in a 8'X15' square and no one would fucking move.

That resulted in pushing people out of my way, people acting like they were going to do something, and my getting a few decent shots...

    Ugh.

But, Ronnie Renner jumped 59.4' over a quarter pipe and landed it. [IMG]

Pics are being edited right meow...

Sound like you had fun, lets see what you got.

Honestly I would of just packed my shit and leave. 40 people in that small place, i would not risk it getting my shit jacked.

It was pretty lame, but worth it.

    Here's one of the many.

Red Bull has a team of Skydivers, as well as a Helicopter that can do barrel rolls and back flips. They also had a Russian Mig covered in Red Bull paint do some flyby's

It was a pretty cool event

Thats pretty fucking lame they stuck all of you in a small box like that. If you are going to pay for a media pass.....there has to be some kind of equal ground.

Nice shots considering. I saw video of the 'record' jump. Hell, I didn't even know that particular jump existed.

Thanks. I didn't have to pay though. I got the pass through Transworld MX. ;) But there was definitely some people in the media area that shouldn't have been there.
