‘Recreational’ shooting inside home leads to homicide

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Authorities believe they have the right man in custody in the shooting death of his friend Thursday night at the suspect’s home near Alba.

Jasper County Sheriff Archie Dunn said Friday morning that Melvin Rodney Long, 38, had been arrested in the slaying of 33-year-old Matthew Sisco. Sisco’s body was found lying in high grass in the front yard of Long’s trailer home at 20453 Millwood Lane.

The county prosecutor’s office filed charges of first-degree murder and armed-criminal action against Long on Friday afternoon.

Dunn said Long and Sisco were drinking and doing some “recreational” discharging of a firearm inside the home when Long became upset and allegedly fired the weapon at Sisco.

“At some point, Melvin became upset at Matthew over something, and reportedly fired the weapon at Matthew at least one time,” Dunn said, adding that it was the first slaying in rural Jasper County since July of 2005.

According to the sheriff, Long and his wife, Vicki Lynn Long, 42, left the trailer on bicycles soon after the shooting and rode about a mile to her mother’s house in Alba to call 911.

“When we arrived and came in contact with the (Longs), they’d been drinking quite heavily and were fairly intoxicated at the time,” Dunn said.

Inconsistencies in the couple’s stories led police to believe they might be suspects.

“They kept changing their stories,” he said. “The stories did not match, in any way.”

Dunn declined to say how many times Sisco had been shot, in what part of his body or what type of firearm was used.

But the victim appeared to have been shot twice in the head and once in the chest, according to a probable-cause affidavit filed by Det. Larry Newman of the Sheriff’s Department. The affidavit states that a .22-caliber rifle with a sawed-off barrel was found in the yard at the home.

Long allegedly told deputies he shot Sisco with the rifle in the chest first, according to the affidavit. The victim was still alive when Long allegedly shot him two more times in the head, the affidavit states.

The sheriff declined to comment on whether the shooting had taken place inside the trailer or outside, and the probable-cause affidavit does not make that detail of the allegations clear. The sheriff did say investigators believe the body had been moved.

Following the 911 call placed at 9:14 p.m., deputies put out an all-points bulletin for a black sport utility vehicle that may have been involved.

“That was a smoke screen,” Dunn said. “We’ve canceled that lookout. It was not involved.”

An autopsy was scheduled to be conducted on the body of Sisco, originally from Little Rock, Ark., on Friday afternoon in Springfield.

At this point, charges are being sought against Melvin Long alone in the shooting. Dunn declined to comment on whether Vicki Long might also face charges.

“We want to interview her again today, see what we come up with and go from there,” he said.

Dunn said the investigation is continuing. With the possible exception of Vicki Long, no other suspects are being sought at this time.

“We feel like we have all the players,” he said.

    Animals removed

An animal-control officer with the Sheriff’s Department was injured at the crime scene when a dog that was being removed from the home scratched and bit the officer. Dunn said more than 13 animals were taken from the Longs’ home.

i've been shooting inside a barn, but we were shooting to the outside, and it was only cause it was raining. Never in a trailer, but i've heard if you hollow one out it makes a pretty good indoor range.

I'd put a good backstop outside, I think they're just made out of just sheetmetal.
