    Windows XP.

2 drives, one storage and one operating system drive

The storage drive was encrypted using Microsoft's built in encryption program.

I had to reformat the the operating system drive.

Now I can't access my stored files.

Am I fubard or is there a way to recover it.

It is all just old pictures, makes me sad to lose them. :wtc:

    Thanks for any info.

You're fubared. Next time you do this, as soon as you start using NTFS encryption, go into Internet Explorer and export your encryption key to a file so you can import it into your new user account if you have to reformat again. You do it like so:

    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Open the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
    3. Go to the Content tab and click the Certificates button.
    4. Find the certificate with the same name as your user account, and a description that says "Encrypting File System", and click the Export button.
    5. Tell it "Yes, export the private key", and other than that use all the default settings. Give it a password that you know you'll remember years from now.
    6. Save it to a floppy disk, label it well, and put it somewhere safe.

If/when you ever have to re-import the certificate on a new machine, you should just be able to double-click it and give it the password you used when you exported it.

I think that's funny. You enabled encryption and are now pissed there is no easy way to recover it? What the fuck were you thinking when you enabled it??? That is the *point* of encryption!!!

Thanks for the information deusex. I'll do that next time.

I never said I was pissed. I enabled it to make the files private. I believed I'd be able to access them by my password. I was unaware that it didn't work off of a password system.

wow, you seem angry, I hope you feel better.

What does it say about a grown ass man that he needs to belittle others on the internet to feel okay about himself?

He didn't enable the dickhead option of OT. In fact, your abuse isn't allowed in this forum.

But its here anyway. Imagine that!

:werd: I would never use encryption that was easily recoverable for anything that's important enough to encrypt.

The point of encryption is to make sure that nobody who doesn't have the key can get to the information. :hsugh:

And your rampaging and insulting everybody strikes me as more abusive than anything they said. Why don't you take a valium or something?

Your password and key basically work together, so without one or the other you are stuffed.

Wow. So, I guess Peyomp and Jolly broke up? Sad. They were a cute couple.
