So I'm making a CD with random utilities I might need in the future... antivirus & anti-spyware software, diagnostic utilities, & just other programs like firefox, winamp, & adobe reader. Anyone got any programs you can recommend to add?

Just download them as you go along... With the wonders of broadband-speed internet, it's quick- and you won't be stuck with outdated programs you'll have to update when you reinstall.

If you only have one hard drive, then having them backed up to disc makes sense.

I've got multiple drives, so I just keep a folder of programs which has @5gb of programs at the moment.

For me the must have ones that I install right after a fresh windows install:

    Alcohol 120%
    DVD Decrypter
    DVDShrink
    Nero 6.6 Ultra
MWSnap (great little screen capture app.)
    Core Temp
    Pest Patrol
    Antivirus
    Spybot S&D
    Adaware SE
Royale Noir (Vista style toolbar app)
    MagicISO for making bootable discs
    Speedfan
Klite codec pack w/media player classic
    RAR Extractnow

On my computer, those go on before anything else.

And if you want a backup program that is just awesome, go with Acronis True Image.

Just put on all of the drivers for your machine. The rest can be done as needed, so you're always with the latest version.
