If it's just for target shooting, then I'd recommend something in the Ruger's like of .22LR semi-auto handguns. I personally have the 22/45 and love it.

If it's for defense, then I'd check into what you like and can afford in a 9mm. The ammo is cheaper and the recoil isn't that bad. A good caliber choice for a first handgun.

Take an NRA safety course BEFORE you buy a gun.

Daisy guns take pretty cheap ammo. Perhaps look into that brand.

    I second this notion

Buy a decent used Glock, Sig or any other quality 9mm. Military surplus 9mm Ammo is dirt cheap. A lot of knowledgeable people will tell you to start out with a .22lr or a revolver. However, lots of police and military recurits , who have never touched a handgun before, learn to shoot on 9mm autos. There is nothing wrong with buying a .22. but I bet that pretty soon you'll be looking for something more powerful.

Even cheap 9mm ammo you're looking at spending $11 for 100 rounds and in a semi-auto handgun that goes fast. .22LR you can get 500 rounds for < $10 at wally world. It's a big difference in cost.

A .22LR will let me spend a lot of time shooting and then I'll put 200 or so through the 9mm everytime I visit. I couldn't afford to shoot as much as I want if I only had a 9mm but a semi-auto .22LR allows me to do just that.
