recommend some good death metal, preferrably on the melodic/progressive/black side

it started with seeing arch enemy live. now i've found bands like dimmu, CoB, opeth, in flames, and others. but, my appetite for metal is insatiable. help me quench my thirst for absolute metal domination.

Well if death metal is your thing then here's a few:

At the gates: not around anymore but were the undisputed kings of death/black metal

Soilwork: Melodic and progressive, plus Devin Townsend helped out on several of their albums.

Emperor: Dark, twisted and relentless. Nuth said :)

Strapping young lad: V angry, heavy and dark, and the legendary Devin townsend is the front man. There new album rocks :bigthumb:

good call on the soilwork and SYL. the other two...eh, not really what i was looking for. part of it, i think, is the poor recording quality on everything that i found. the other thing is the vocal style.

but, for soilwork and SYL, good shit. thanks.

You probably listened to At the Gates' older stuff, but you NEED to get their Slaughter of the Soul album. At the very least get the tracks Slaughter of the Soul and Suicide Nation. They'll rip you a new asshole.

As for Soilwork, avoid the new album. It blows.

Also, check out Dark Tranquillity (esp. The Gallery, The Mind's I, Projector, and Damage Done) and Dissection. They're ridiculously good. Based on what you said you like, you might also like Kalmah, Entombed, Agalloch, In the Woods, Omnium Gatherum, Iced Earth, Nevermore, Rotting Christ, Sentenced, Immolation, Immortal, Bal Sagoth, Vintersorg, and Borknagar.

Hope you find something you like.

Glad to be of service :bigthumb:

Like Bhaloo said though, you NEED to get some more At the gates stuff, you'll love them if you give em a chance. In addition to the tracks Bhaloo suggested, try getting Terminal spirit disease and Forever blind as there also superb tracks :)
