So for the last day or so I've been trying to setup Webmin on a fresh install of Ubuntu 7.10 Served Ed.

Can't get it setup correctly, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience of other free control panel programs, and if they would recommend them.

At present I'm considering give CentOS a go, but this will bring me to more problems in learning how it works, Ubuntu is hard enough.

Any info or advice will be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Are you hoping to resell hosting or manage a ton of domains?

No sir, just setting up a server at home so I can SSH into it from the wild, and also host a couple sites/hold files accessible also from the wild.

It's a hobby setup to learn on, nothing of value really.

Webmin isn't too hard to setup ... I use it form time to time here on the production debian boxes. I use ssh 99% of the time though.

I chucked plesk on one of our boxes it does the job but it does some funky stuff to configs which I didnt like but for anything fairly standard it would be spot on.

I'd go for Plesk ASAP, but you have to pay for it

i find linux in general more difficult than win, just from growing up in a MS world.
But, I do like the fact that I havent taken shortcuts in linux and am doing my time.
For that reason, i would shy away from "front ends" and learn the command line stuff.
In the end, you will be farther ahead.
