Would a 430EX I be a good flash to get started with? Eventually I want to be able to do some wireless and eventually some multi-strobe setups. Will this work or do I need the II?

Yeah. THe 430 has the ETTL function but also allows manual mode if you want to be more creative. If you go with the multi strobe set up, you can either purchase the 580 or the ST-E2. If you go wireless, Vivitar 285s are the better choice. YOu can buy the 430 now and purchase the VIvitars later. It's always nice to have at least one flash with ETTL capability for the times you can't mess with the power settings.

I've got a 430EX and I love it. Easily adaptable to use with PocketWizards. I'm in the process of picking up a Nikon SB-28 to use as part of a multi strobe setup...if the 430EX wasn't still $340 out here I would consider getting another one.

Let us know how you like it. I'm thinking of using 285s with peanut slaves in the near future.

I have a 285hv and it never sees any use. I mainly use my 550ex + 430ex + 420ex. I will only use it if I have no other choice. Was thinking of selling it.

Is the cycle time for 1/4 or 1/8 power pops really as bad as I have been hearing?

haha it to stick on my pop up flash to bounce upwards. So far it looks ok for a cut open bottle of rubbing alchohol with a piece of paper glued to it.
