I'm looking for a scope to put on my .270 WSM Winchester Model 70 for deer season. I'm willing to spend $170 max. Any suggestions?

I have a few Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40's, I highly recommend them, the rainguard is absolutely amazing. They sell for about $170 on Ebay, make sure to check there for scopes, it's where I usually find the lowest prices.

170 bucks for a scope for a .270? :nono: Spend some money and get a good scope. You should spend at least half of the cost of the rifle on good optics.

You can buy alot of rifles for around $340. And while I am a proponent of quality optics, your "at least half" rule is flawed.

OK? If its a $340 gun then a $170 scope would be fine. From my research i see the model 70s in .270 going for 500-1000. Is my rule still flawed?

Yes and it gets horrible when prices get real high :mamoru:

also a M70 super shadow can be had for ~$400, usually with a scope infact.

You can always go to Walmart and pick up a Remington 710 for $325:hsugh:
It comes with a free 3-9x40 Bushnell scope

The gun was about $380 + tax from walmart. It came with a crappy simmons scope that retails for $30.

You can't really give a definite rule on what to spend on optics, there are too many exceptions :dunno: I wouldn't put a Swarovski AV on a Savage 110 but I also wouldn't mount a $40 Tasco on it either :hsugh:

unless you shoot in alot of low light the firefly isn't worth paying extra for, plus the crosshairs are heavy as compared to the other models.

That would probably be worth more to a collector than anyone else, Unertl's in good condition are worth alot.

I think it would be a little awkward for me to use something like that

Yes, very. You assume the gun is new, and your Model 70 pricing is high. Besides that, if I were to say buy a NULA Model 20, which is about $2200, I should spend $1100 on a scope? Or a Banser Ultimate One, which is about $5k, so there's a $2500 scope. The higher the price goes, the less sense you "rule" makes. And besides, more money doesn't always equal a better scope.
