Cliffs: I want a decent inexpensive flashlight.

This past Sunday at 5:30AM, while I was out of town, my roommate was getting ready for work (he's a cop in a neighboring town), he heard someone walk through our front door. He had ordered pizza the night before and forgot to lock the door after the driver left. He was getting dressed in the dark because his girlfriend was sleeping so it took him a second to find his gun and then he crept down the hall to the living room. He finds a random guy there and draws on him. The guy is freaking out saying he needs help and someone with a shotgun is after him from some party he was at. The girlfriend calls 911 and the roomie holds the guy on the couch till the local police come. They ended up arresting the guy. Anyway, I've been putting off getting a flashlight and I finally need to get one in case something like this happens again. Are those $20 LED ones at gun shows any good? I think I'd like to keep it under $40 as long as I can get something half decent and bright enough to temporarily blind someone.

I like Mag lights. Easy to find and pretty reliable.

G2's are great lights, although if your budget is tight look into the Brinkman Maxfire lights. They're similar brightness and about $20 at Target or Walmart.

The brinkman maxfire has been marked down to $12 at my local targets. Great light, buy a couple and leave 'em laying around. Although I think the "blinding" thing is a load of crap still.

I'm a big fan of G2's for cheap lights. Nuwai Qwhatevernumber are pretty good budget LED lights.

But to really blind someone with a light you'd be hard pressed to beat the old 2D or 3C Maglites. :big grin:

I think you meant beat someone to death with. Even the 3d maglite is 42 lumens, you'll probably see 60 from the surefire or maxfire. The 2d is a whopping 20 lumens. Combined with their short run times til they dim and that you have to feed them alkaline's that are always dead when you need them...they're best left for your grandpa unless you want a club ;) Not that a club is a bad idea in the home. The 4 cell maglite is closest in output to a 2 cell cr123a light. Maglites have a very undeserved reputation and being great, much like people that feel like "guinness is a meal in a can" despite it being a very light beer.

I ordered one of these and it's extreamly bright and works great, it's mounted on my AR and I've had no problems as of yet. I figured I'd try and save $125.00 over getting the same Surefire... and if this was junk it's only $22!

    Ultrafire C2 3W Cree $22.35 "free shipping"

I had a 2D LED Mag-lite. It was very bright and very solid. It's not your tacticool light or anything but it was a very strong light.

I don't think they have them, but I'm thinking a Surefire tail may work, they are modeled right after them.

They have most every style light there.

These both take two 3V CR123A batteries, LED, aluminum body, sealed w/ glass lenses, but the Surefire is $141.18 higher in price!

    Surefire L4 LED $165.00

    UltraFire Alpha-C1 CREE LED $23.82

Those Ultrafire's are decent lights, but are NO WAY the quality of Surefire's. But who cares for $25. Although I do own a ton of SF stuff, I love the quality.

True, they are not a high-end light, but they are just as bright as my Surefire (actually brighter then my 6Z) and you can get a bunch to lay around the house cheaper than one Surefire.

for a weapon light, say on an AR15, how would it compare to a SF? think i would be better off getting surefire quality for something of that nature?

im sure for around the house/camping/car its perfect, im thinking of getting one

G2, 6P, etc are all good

magcharger with an upgraded bulb is good

Mag85 is the best. Blinds anyone in front of it, then you can use the back of it.
