My gf wants to get further into her photography hobby. She likes to take pics of scenery, I want to use it to take pics when Im at the track. I was looking at the Nikon D60 and D40 (In that price range). Which do you recommend and which lenses for the style of pics we want to take?

Is she pretty set on Nikon? I'd say check out the XSi from Canon as far as body as well.

Out of my budget. I want to get her a kit, body and lens, and it seems Nikon has the most affordable

Ok, then check out the XS instead. It's cheaper than the D60 and better quality than the D40. Includes the kit lens, body, and all that stuff

I got the Nikon d40x this summer and haven't outgrown it yet - its nice enough not to feel like a p&s, but not a big sucka like some of the pricier ones.

Look at ones refurbed from Newegg, they come with warranties and mine only had 400 shutter clicks

Does it have to be a SLR? Have you looked at "advanced P&S's" like the Canon G10 or the LUX3?

For the cost of a G10 I might as well get a D40 or D60

If you can't put money into decent lenses, don't get a DSLR.

Please check your post. There's usually a reason for the red line under the word. Sorry, it's a forum pet peeve.

The kit lens generally isn't very good quality. A good lens would cost more than the camera and the kit combined.
