    I need a dslr for work (Private investigations)...Nothing crazy like a d200

but something that is a decent starter and soemthing that can grow with my advancing in photography...

I was looking at the d50 and d40

d50 is a good deal cause it's discontinued, but the d40 has some nice perks...pros and cons of either? I've read soem reviews but don't see if the d40 is worth the extra cash...any other recommendations?

many many people still prefer the d50 over the d40. I just purchased the d50 and its a great dslr camera that you can grow into. The only pros to the d40 is the 2.5inch LCD screen. It also is smaller but if you have big hands that might not be a plus. The d50 is compatible with almost all of the nikon cameras unlike the d40.

using it for private investigation work I'm assuming that large prints won't be necessary... so I'd pick up a used 10D (Xti is just to small for large lenses IMO) and one of those cheap 600-1200mm lenses off of ebay..... :dunno:

If you're going to be mounting a big lens like that I'd look at the D70s or D80.

yes most photos will be distance...I will need a good lense...

AS of now large prints haven't been needed, but maybe depending if cases are drug to court and magnification of an individual is needed...

IS the canon xti really comparable to the d50? I've heard all sorts of rumors...

Canon makes the best lenses...Sports Illustrated only allows photos from Canon lenses etc etc...

I've been reading at dpreview.com...good reviews of individual cameras but no real head to head?
