I used this book for my Java class...I do like his writing style but at times I thought it was a bit too focused on obscure features but most times I liked it and found it very helpful.

I used a book similar to this next one...but it was for c++. Herbert Schildt has a very easy delivery and I really like his beginning books...especially for the complete noob. There are times when I want more info but shit there's plenty of books like that on the market. IMO Schildt is one of the best writers of beginning programming books!!

YOu prolly don't want something tailored to the complete noob but here you go....just in case.

i got the book last week and after reading the first 3 chapters realized that there are no programming assignments or questions at the end of each chapter. this, in my opinion, is a huge negative. does anyone know if there are any programming assignments i can get somewhere else or can recommend a different book.

wrox usually does a lot more examples, and usually does an enterprise-grade application start-to-finish, which is gonna take the extra ink.

I know my ASP, PHP, and SQL books from Wrox have been very valuable.

i might have to use that book instead then, thanks. i really liked the core java2 volume I book but i can't do without programming assignments at the end of each chapter.

is that weird or does anyone else feel this way?

yea, I know what ya mean. You may also check the local university bookstore... You can always find good textbooks or assignment lab-books.

the wrox book was the assigned text book when i took night classes. i still have the previous version (SDK 1.4). trying to figure out if i should spend the extra $40 on the newest edition or just learn from the one i have.

prolly learn what you have... picking up the nuances for the newer jre shouldn't be too difficult once you have the basics.
