Recommend me a a decent home theater speaker system for under 250?
I have a receiver I just need speakers and sub. Just for watching movies pretty much. I'm in college and it would be what I'd get for Christmas. I know it won't be anything great but I just would like the best for the money. Thanks.

so you have a reciever just sitting in your closet, or do you have some speakers hooked up to it?

If so, Id use those crap ass speakers for fronts, buy a center channel off ebay with no smaller than 4.5" drivers, and another pair of crap ass speakers for the rear.

If not, buy the two fronts and a center channel all from the same brand off ebay, and some crap ass rears.

    OR

Buy 5 ok bookshelf speakers and forget the sub.

    IDEALLY

Save up another $250 so you have $500 and can buy a nice 3.1 setup on Ebay

please dont buy into the hype of those little 2 inch box speakers they sell in sets at best buy for $200. If it looks like shit, most likely it will sound like shit.

    smaller != better (aka Bose)

here's another system for only $100 if you're looking for a deal on a whole system. couldn't tell you how it sounds, but if it retails for $250, i would think it'd be worth it. free shipping too.

    its by Philips

I actually do i have a pair of JBL decade series the model for them is D38. they are 3 way speakers.
    Here's the specs on them:
    Sensitivity dB @ 1m/2.83V:92
    Impedance (ohms):8
    Bass Driver:8"
    Midrange Driver:4"
    High Frequency Driver:2"
    Power Rating:10 - 175 watts
    Dimensions HxWxD:16 3/4 x 10 3/4 x 12"
    Frequency Response:50 - 20kHz

So if I used those would I put them as front or rears? So now I have 250 to spend on a center speaker, subwoofer and another set of pair of speakers for the rear I'm assuming? Or for now I could even just spend 250 on center speaker and subwoofer and get the rears in a month or 2. So some recommendations on those would be appreciated. Thanks.

Those JBL D38's are fronts. If I were you, I'd save my money and get an Onkyo HT-S770B HTIB. I just bought one and it's simply an amazing system.

I never liked sony speakers. always sounded grainy. But then again, I can't remember the last "sony" product I really liked over the competition.

just get a logitech 5.1 speaker system. DAMN good buy for around $200, and I gurantee that you won't find a better performing system even if you spent $500

I've always like the sound of Polk Audio, but beauty is in the eye/ear of the beholder. What sounds good to me, may or may not sound good to you. Go to all the local stores and listen. Doesn't cost anything to listen.
