Where's a good show to start at? One of my friends is raving about Full Metal Alchemist.

it all depends on what you like, there is anime for every genre. FMA in my opinion really suprised me and turned out to be a good one. i would assume that is because i am big into drama and animes that have a message. if you like romance ask that guy TUN :o.

    fma is a good one
i also recommend ghost in the shell stand alone complex, escaflowne, samurai champloo, and elfen lied

these represent different genres so you might find you like one more than another

Not familiar with anime genres but I watched Record of Lodoss War a while back and I liked it.

Recently, my friend showed me some of the movies from the same director/studio such as Howl's Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke. They were really good though they don't seem quite anime-ish as some of the commercials for the shows on Saturday nights on Cartoon Network.

Also, I was really into the tv show Firefly and heard it being compared to Cowboy Bebop.

If you like Japanese sports cars, then Initial D for sure.

If you like Firefly, then Cowboy Bebop for sure.

If you like Record of Lodoss War, then maybe Berserk? I didn't see Berserk myself.

If you like RPGs and samurai, try Bleach.

If you like RPGs and ninjas, try Naruto.

    Samurai Champloo (samurai)
Black Lagoon (gun fights - crime)
Ghost in the Shell (Police investigation kind of stuff)
Any gundam (big ass robots that go around shooting at each other in space and on earth.)
    - 0079 (the first Gundam)
    - 8th MS TEAM (12 episodes, based more on modern military tactics, hiding behind cover, 3 man teams, etc.)
    - 0080 (5-6 episodes IIRC, deals more with the personal lives of the pilots)
    - Seed (romance, loss of comrades, controversy of the use of nuclear based weapons)
    - Wing (slight romance, basic gundam formula: they go to earth, they fight, they go back into space, they save the earth)
    Beck (music)
    FLCL (randomness)
    Azumanga Daioh (more randomness)
Full Metal Panic (Robots with some sci-fi)
    Hajime no Ippo (boxing)
    Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (randomness?)
    School Rumble (randomness)
    Trigun (sci-fi gun fights)
    Ai Yori Enishi (romance)
Fate Stay Night (magic + sword fights)
Zero no Tsukaima ( same basic idea as Fate Stay Night but the character roles are reversed)

just some off the top of my head
