Hey guys, can anyone recommend for me a good VPS? I currently have one that is China-based, but I'm getting a lot of complaints from people in the States that the speeds when accessed from there are major-league slow.

Ideally, I'd like one hosted in the US that can be accessed at decent speeds inside China as well.

What should I be looking for in terms of specs?

Also, please recommend for me a good hosting company!

    Thanks! :)

As high as USD$200 per month. Just got a quote from Siteground, dedicated managed server for USD$180 per month: 2GB RAM, 3,000 GB traffic.

Speed test they gave me: http://epicbattleaxe.com (runs fairly well from China)

$200 is a good budget. If you need it managed, i'd say that's the right ballpark, since human time is going to be the biggest component of the cost. Find out exactly what's included in the management though, as different companies have different definitions (e.g. some are pro-active, whereas others are reactive).

I would generally recommend going for a dedicated over most virtual dedicated since it can sometimes be difficult to tell what performance you're going to get on a virtualized system. You generally have no idea on the share of the CPU you'll get as well as running in to issues with lack of I/O on a busy system.

I'm with WiredTree (http://www.wiredtree.com). I've been with them for a couple of months and they have been awesome. They're very quick to answer support tickets as well. Fully managed, great support, fast servers.

Check them out on webhostingtalk.com, lot's of good reviews.

Thanks for the replies. Wiredtree looks interesting.

BTW, just got clearance from the boss to spend as much as USD$350 per month. In that price range, what sort of specs should I be looking for?

Also, how many sites could I comfortably run (all Joomla systems) on a $350/month server?

Thanks in advance for the info!

You could run a thousand Joomla sites on that server or you could run 1 Joomla site on the server. It depends how well optimised the installations are and how much traffic you're expecting.

we are recommending high spec servers when we dont even know what kind of traffic he is getting. pos that and you might save yourself a bunch of money by going with a decent $50 vps that can save you a boatload of cash.

Nothing massive. It's going to to be a company brochure site (minimal traffic), a recruiting site for teachers wanting to come to China (best case 500 uniques per day) and 2-3 other projects with similar best case targets (500-1000 unique visitors per day).

Re: the teachers recruiting site, our competition is eslcafe.com. That server is based in the US and it runs very fast from China. Would love to know what they are using...

BTW, as you might have guessed, I know very little about server technology, so I could really use OTs help, to figure this out...
