Hi guys, I recently bought an 89 Honda Accord lxi and I'm looking to beef up the audio. Right now it's got an after market sony stereo(although it's pretty old for being after market, not in very good condition, the cd player has some issues) with 4 basic speakers, 2 on the sides, 2 in the back. Now I know very little about car audio and I'm on a pretty tight budget so I'm not sure exactly what I should get. I'd like to get a nice looking faceplate, some good reliable speakers and eventually some kind of cd-changer. My budget is around $500. Any recomendations? All advice is appreciated.

Coming up with a solution in 10 mins... people say you can't get a good system for $500... that's complete bullshit if you know what to get and where to look.

For your car we'll go with front coax and not worry about components because i'm sure the car doesn't have space for components. While they improve the imaging no end, you'll have to cut up your car someway so we might as well stay basic

SUB BOX: your choice of sealed 12" sub box ~$30

doh came out to about $670 shipped. If you are paying that, you can upgrade to an Alpine Type-R and finish below $700

of course we need to buy a wiring kit and such.

Could always go with an unamped speaker solution

    Clarion dxz545mp HU
infinity reference at front and back
    same profile sub amp
    alpine type R
    sealed box

would come to WAY less but amping speakers is great

What exactly does amping speakers do? I'm not sure how much bass I need for subs, I can save some $$$ by making my own box(im good with wood). So maybe I can upgrade that. I was thinking maybe an alpine faceplate, they look about the same price and I can get one at cartoys so I'll save on shipping, plus I like the layout.

    What exactly do amps do?

They amplify the signal from your Head Unit to your speakers.

Sounds good. otherwise you may over power your main stage with the bass, which doesn't exactly sound very impressive :big grin: Work your way up, and in the end you will be happier with your setup.
