I want to see whats out there.
this page is worthless.
I hit new egg for the listed options, and they dont say anything about mac compatibility, so i'm afraid there wont be any software to install, unless the OS handles it all. Which i think it does.
8800GT, 7300GT, X1900XT. Besides Quadro's those are you only options AFAIK.
yea i know, but can i jsut pop in to the local place and buy a PC branded box off the rack?
I want Santa to bring me a Quadro FX 5600 for xmas.
i didnt think so... so where does one buy these stupid cards Nvidia lists since they dont sell them, themselves.
you could do it for the windows side of things but don't take out the card that came with the MP or you're fucked for OS X
that said, get a radeon HD 3850 for windows gaming
I game in the Mac side and havent installed windoze yet.
I have zero interest to do so either.
It depends on which Mac Pro you have.
Old Mac Pro (2006/2007):
1900XT: Direct from Apple, or maybe you could find a Mac version on ebay, it's expensive from Apple, and has had many issues, I wouldn't reccomend it.
2600XT: Not as good as the 1900XT, but it works, and offers some performance over the 7300GT. Can buy direct from Apple [LINK] for $150 or you might be able to find one on eBay or the classified sections of the larger mac forums as people are selling them.
8800GT: Currently doesn't work but Apple said it was meant to and Nvidia claimed they would sort out the issue, I'd wait if it's just for gaming. It's only been like 6 weeks since they said they would fix it and only a few since the 8800GTs even started shipping.
New Mac Pro (2008)
8800GT: Direct from Apple [LINK], for $350, or you can buy an off the shelf one for under $250 and reflash the ROM (this will perhaps be an option for the older MP too). Here is a thread that discusses which cards work and how to do it: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=434092&page=14. Note that the newer 512mb 8800GTS also works and so should other G92 based cards that come out over the rest of the year.
There are also people running other cards based on drivers used for hackintoshes (pcs running hacked OSX) on both old and new mac pros. This thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=410804 has details in it somewhere, but you might also look at the http://www.insanelymac.com/ forums and see what people are doing.
When hacking and reflashing ROMS you will need windows I believe, though I would think bootcamp would be a solution.
what are you doing that you need a high end video card?
I've got the 1900 and i love it
