I just bought a used 420EX and I hear the flashes blow through batteries quick and I don't want to buy new ones every couple of days. what does everyone use? what's the best bang for the buck? I've found some cheap ones online but kinda scared to buy them.

please link me if you have them.

    These eneloops are sick.

I don't worry about em. i just know they'll work.

I charged em before my trip to California, and left em in the sb600 for just under two weeks, when I finally had a need for the flash.

Put em on, turned it on, and it recycled just as fast as if I just pulled em off the charger.

Took ~180 shots with the flash in just under a half hour, it worked flawlessly.

I still haven't recharged em, because they don't need it.

Want to get one or two of Al Jacobs battery packs, he makes the best battery system, but currently trying to decide on a 580 EX or a Quantum Q5.

    Eneloop looks very interesting.

Been using 2500mAh Energizer rechargeables for about a year. I have 6 sets of 4 batteries for my 2 Sunpak 120js and 420EX. Very fast recycle times usage varies depending on output. My experience is they last about 150+/- full power discharges before I start to see significant recycle delay of an estimated 3-5+ secs. I have a fast 15min charger at the ready but the 6 sets has never failed me for a full days shooting 1000+.

Tip: get a car cigarette adapter/converter (AC/DC thing), picked up a basic one for $19 at Target. Provides convenient power if you need to plug one of your camera batteries, flash batteries, laptop, etc. to recharge while on location.

A few resources for battery info:

This one may not have been updated since last year sometime.

Some battery user reviews, mostly a good starting point for seeing what is available in the AA market.

Some good battery prices here: http://www.thomas-distributing.com/index.htm
Never bought from Thomas Distributing but the prices look good.

    For the DIY'er

Build your own external battery powered setup. Also where I think I read about Al Jacobs for the first time.

The original Al Jacob battery pack, DIY kit.

I use the energizer rechargables and they are awesome.

I leave them in my SB600 for weeks at a time.
