Just received my new nikkor 50 1.4G today, i heard great things about this lens.

After a couple test shots, and what not, im not quite sure its any better than its cheap little brother. the 1.8 is just as sharp, focus speed seems to be the same, colors seem relatively the same.

    Pros of the G:
Bigger, Better built, weather sealing, quiet focus.

Ill give it a week of using it, ill see what the real use with flare and CA thrown in the mix. But right now, im thinking this puppy may be put back in the Buy and Sell forum of Fredmiranda. Maybe get a 85 1.8 or something instead.

I don't check FM very often anymore but happened to look the other day about 5 minutes after you bought this thing. At least if you don't like it you can sell it for a nice profit

Looking at samples and reviews online, I also decided the G wasn't any nicer than the AFD version. Why don't you sell both and buy the sigma?

I think the 50 is probably the one lens with sigma where it isn't a lottery, they all seem awesome

welp after using it last night, Im def not a fan. Seems the focusing is too slow for me. It wouldnt track a subject in low light (iso1600, 2.0, 1/200)

I put up an FT on Fredmiranda for the sigma unit. Hopefully someone bites. I know the sigma focuses very fast, plus i like teh fact i can use all my 77mm filters as well.

I dont normally buy non Nikkors, but took a chance on the Sig... its pretty well built.
77 is a "standard" size for me, so that works too.

Its sharp, focuses fast and has a very nice creamy bokeh, as promised.
Generally good rendition of tones, nice gradations, not too punchy.
Its also a little easier to work with than the 85 1.4

    pretty satisfied, all in all.

i love the nikkor 50 1.8. $130 and amazing quality on the d90

i really want a 35 1.8 though. 50 is a little too far out there on a crop

you get what you pay for...

The 50 1.4 USM was ok at best.

The sigma 50 1.4 Canon mount was amazing. I loved that damn lens. It rarely left my 1dmkiiN for personal work, when i had it.

The nikon 50 1.8D is an amazing little lens. Ive pondered just selling the 50 1.4G for a profit and just keeping the 50 1.8D, its that good. But i really want the siggy back. I love teh weight and handling of it, as well as teh flare control, and smooth bokeh

Just picked up the 1.8 from a fellow OTer and I love the wide open aperture! seems to be a great lens from the day I have had it.

its a splendid lens for teh price. Better than the 50 1.8 of canon for sure. But i think its due to the d700/d300 AF system making the lens faster and more accurate to focus.

ok after using the lens more last night, im really on the fence. Ive beginning to notice more of a creamier effect than i have ever seen on the 1.8D. However, i noticed that focusing off anything other than the center point is a hit or miss thing. Never had that problem with the 1.8D, but seems i do with the 1.4G.

    Here are some sample pics.
