I'm filling out my Form 4's right now for my suppressor and wondering what I should put where it says, "I _____, have a reasonable necessity to posses the machine gun.... for the following reason(s)_________"

I couldn't find anything while searching which makes me think it isn't that big of a deal. I'm thinking "recreation" will suffice. Any suggestions?

I've heard that "INVESTMENT" was the best thing to put there.

I use "Investment, enhancement of collection, all lawful purposes"

Both have been approved so far.

    I'd put "discretion".

This. Because all lawful purposes can cover a lot, but it doesn't hurt to add the investment (who can argue with that?) and collector bit (even England and Oz left the collectors alone until they got everyone else.)

Perfect. Thanks again. While you guys are in here the last thing I got to was the "certification of compliance with 18 USC 922." (ATF form 5330.20)

I guess it's an ATF form that says your a US citizen. So 2 questions

    1. Who fills this out? (i.e. who do I get to certify to my citizenship)

    2. I already filled in my name before I realized someone else is supposed to fill it out AND I didn't use all capitals like it says to at the top. Did I fuck it all up?

I can't say I know they'd return it, but to avoid delay of having them return it, I wouldn't give them any reason, would make sure the instructions were followed to the letter.

Shit, Good call. Now i have to figure out where to get a new one. I was reading around and found this:

"its the stupidest form ever, YOU are required to certify that YOU are a citizen.

they even have the balls to post a "Paperwork Reduction Act " notice on the back"

if it's anything like my FFL-03-C&R if you're a US citizen you simply print your name and sign.

Yup thats what it seems. Found a .pdf on ATF's site so I'm finally good to go. My local Sheriff's office is really cool too. Seem pretty knowledgeable and willing to help. Thanks again for the help everyone.

I just put "all lawful purposes"

I had a buddy put "because chicks dig it and all lawful purposes". It's currently "pending", we'll see what happens.

"High CDI factor" is definitely a legit reason, but remember, these are the same people that say two pieces of plastic taped together are a legal firearm...

I'm pretty sure their senses of humor were beaten out of them in high school.

Reading through this thread just makes me amazed anyone could ever figure out this maze of paperwork before this type of information was readily available on the internet.

For this line I have always used "ear protection decibel rate reducer."

Which is why when you talk about it on OT, there is invariably someone who tells you there is a yearly upkeep on it, like a corporation.

If you want good information on NFA stuff, OT really isn't the place.

I've talked to a few people irl that have gone through the steps for things like suppressors and they have all said that the trust should be a last-resort.
