My friends wife is buying a shotty for her husband. I personally like the 20" + extended tube for HD, but he will probably shoot skeet more than anything else. How worthless is the riot barrel for skeet? She's looking to pick one up today and needs some advice.

  2. If it's a barrel with a fixed cylinder choke, it'd be pretty tough to use it for any kind of clay shooting. If it's got swappable chokes, it's at least doable.

I've used my 18" Mossberg a couple times for shooting clays... either because I forgot my long barrel or just for shits and grins. Once the clays are more than about 30 yards away the short barrel is useless.

Doesn't Remington have a combo kit for the 870? HD and hunting barrel in one package. That would be the best option.

I've seen a couple guys shoot clays with 18" barrels, even with close shots the slay just barely breaks up, always looks like only one or two pieces of shot hit it.
