    Which one?

Main goal is for outdoors shooting and action/moving shots.

    I would suggest not buying a D40.

    Definitely XTi over D40.

    No D40 or D60, that's it.

wait for a Deal from Dell. I know a couple people who have gotten XTi kits for around 475 and one person who got just the body for like 389 or something ridiculous. These Dell deals come up fairly often, so you should definitely keep an eye out.

If you go Nikon, don't go with anything less than a D70.

dropped $100 to what? I only see the body for $569 and the xti/18-55 kit for $600. Those aren't that great of prices. Amazon has the kit for $590 with free shipping and the body-only for $520 with free shipping. B&H has the Body-only for $510

Take it from a D40 owner:

If money is an issue, don't enter this expensive hobby or buy an XTi. Get a D70 (outdated), or a D80 as a first camera if you decide to go with Nikon.

I fucking hate not being able to use most of the lenses out there because they won't focus on my D40. I'm cashing in my tax refund for a D300 though :).
