I work at Fry's so there are always deals to be had. If anything goes wrong with a part I can easily replace it within retail hours no strings attached. It's worth it to me to have that kind of convenience even if it's an extra $50-$100 I could of saved.

The prices listed are the ones that I get at Fry's.

    Intel Core2Quad Q6600 for $190
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115017

    Gigabyte P35-DS3L for $95
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059

    EVGA 9600GT 512MB for $185
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130328

    Antec Nine Hundred for $80
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021&Tpk=nine%2bhundred

    Corsair Dominator PC8500 2x1GB for $89
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145043

    Maxtor DiamondMax 500GB for $90
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822144450

    Corsair 620HX for $150
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139002&Tpk=620hx

    Zalman CNPS9700 for $63
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019

    So in total it's:

    CPU: $190
    Mobo: $95
    GPU: $185
    Tower: $80
    Memory: $89
    HD: $90
    OS: Pirated
    PSU: $150
    CPU Fan: $63
    Miscellaneous: $50

    Total before tax: $992

    Thoughts welcomed and expected.

This is supposed to be a $1K build but I don't mind shelling out extra if it isn't too outrageous.

:ugh: why do people take a decent machine and stick it in a fucking antec case?

Like putting a LS7 in a Ford Focus.

you will be miserable with that asus mobo. Best off with an intel, but go gigabyte/abit if you have some irrational fear of reliability.

memory is okay. I prefer corsair, however.

What is your beef with the case? I hear nothing but good reviews from enthusiasts and for $80 it's hard to pass up.

The other salesman tell me that Intel mobos have a lot of memory problems and more than mixed reviews about the latter two.

What's your opinion on Crucial Ballistix? I can get 4GB (4x1GB) total for $70 after rebate.

What's the general consensus with Vista 32-bit and gaming?

I can get a legit copy for $25 from a university...

I've been trying to figure that one out for myself. My best guess is rabies.

I would agree with him on the motherboard for a non overclocked build with the quad core,. Go with an Intel P35 chipset board.

Crucial Ballistix is ok. I'm running 2gb of the 1066 stuff with my Q6600.
But you would be just as well off, and maybe better in the long run with Corsair XMS.

No problems exactly with the Western Digital drive, but the Seagates are the same price range and carry a 5 year warranty.
You want to go with the 32mb cache drives.

Well, honestly I'm a little sketchy about OCing right now. I might OC it to 3GHz off the bat or until I get Crysis/Mass Effect.:rofl: If that were the case would you choose ASUS over any other brand.

Thanks for the Seagate advice; it'll be looked into tomorrow. :)

I like the XMS2 series myself but can't find it for cheap at my store. We used to have it for $40 for the 4-4-4-12 2GB set but it's at $60 a pop again. :wtc:

Alright, what case do you guys recommend then?

I've been eyeing the CM Mystique or 690 but hear that it uses a lot of cheap plastic parts to keep everything together.

This is the case I have, and I used it to build my brother's machine also: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119068

It's simple, at least that is the look I was going for. no clear side panel, no ricer blue led's. I got it about 6 months ago, when there was a 20 dollar rebate on it. It works for me.

If the main problem you guys have with the Antec case is purely aesthetics then I'll pull the trigger on the one I chose.

What's the difference to a gamer between M.C.E./Home/Pro?

the antec 900 isn't the worst case out there, but it isn't worth that much IMO

What of it when it comes to keeping the room quiet or ventilation? Again if it's just aesthetics when I'm content with it.

Or...what about the Antec P18x series?

p18x series is a good case for antec, and they are quiet as fuck. the 900 is surprisingly quiet IMO :o

either way, lian-li has many good/better cases in a similar price range

    SL9UM (B3 Stepping) = 105W
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9UM

    SLACR (G0 Stepping) = 95W
    http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLACR

SLACR is the updated version which consumes less power, higher tcase, and has all the errata of SL9UM fixed.

Asus boards' overclockability are still the best among the big brands. But quality wise, their low/mid end P35 boards sucks. Most are plaque with SATA problems and production issues. If you will not overclock, there's no point spending that money on their high end boards.
For that price range, get a Gigabyte board. Gigabyte boards also offers great OC options.

the 8800 G92s (GT and GTS) are still faster than the 9600GT. If the price diff isn't that huge, get the G92 8800GTS. It has a better cooler than the 8800GT norm.

great airflow, fans can be noisy, ugly case.

    these sucks. get Corsair.
I have Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1066 PC2-8500s. Love em. They are expensive compared to others. Again, if you will not OC, don't bother.

    get Seagate 7200.11

fuck XP Home. MCE is basicly XP Pro with Media Center features.
    No diff in games.

    it's $114 after rebates/free shipping @ buy.com
$104.99 if you use google checkout or look for a buy.com coupon.

quads runs hotter than dual cores so that Zalman cooler will definitely help. It's way better than the Intel stock cooler.
Note that these coolers are huge and are pain in the ass to install.
It is best to buy and install them when you build the pc.

There's a lot of irrational haters in this forum when it comes to Antec.

The Nine Hundred case will cool as good or better than any other case that's going to get mentioned in this thread.

This is a perfect example of why the Antec haters make me nuts.

You can find a bunch of Lian Li cases that run 80mm buzz fans for cooling.

Whatever you decide on, at least get something with 120mm fans and/or larger.

personally I'd get a lian li that takes 120mm. there's PLENTY of choices with those requirements.

That said, I'd still take a lian li with 80mm fans over a shitty antec.

I actually like the Antec 900, it tends to be very quiet, cable runs internally are a bitch though. I'd go intel mainboard too if not overclocking. Also the Q9300 not much more money, and probably worth it.

    Some revisions made:

Replacing the current mobo with the Gigabyte DS3L:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128059

    ...and getting the Corsair Dominator:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145043

With some luck and a favor or two I'll get a copy of XP 32 bit for ~$50 from a university. Likewise they'll offer Vista 32 and 64 around that price so what's good in the long run? Vista 64 bit is still shunned by most games but it'll be the norm sooner or later.

Well, it's definitely a gaming case. No question about it. But to me there are two critical issues with a case, and that's the cooling and the way the drives mount.
Antec does both of those superbly.

And looks are really a subjective issue anyway.

As far as Lian Li goes, give me a nice black anodized case, with the 120mm fans, and yeah that would be sweet.

But my Antec NSK-6500 case with the removable 5 drive cage, with separate slide out drive trays with silicone grommets gives me a geek boner, what can I say?

    :dunno:
