    Upgrading from a AMD Sempron 2400, 6600gt 128mb

    CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041 $219.99

    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P P45 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358 $134.99

    RAM: Crucial Ballistic Tracer 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC1333 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148261 $69.99

    GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 X2 2GB 512-bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102809 $219.99

    PSU: Corsair CMPSU-750TX 750W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006 $119.49

CPU Heatsink: Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134 $31.98

    Total with Shipping: $807.84

My biggest concern is if that the best RAM to get? I don't want to spend a fortune on this either. Would going ATI Crossfire with those cards be worth while?

Wrong RAM, you want DDR2, plus I prefer Corsair over Crucial. The HX series PSUs from Corsair are higher quality than the TX, though the TX are still very good.

As for the crossfire, they would be worth while assuming the game supports it. Anandtech recently updated their GPU buyers guide:
    http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3588

Core i7 motherboards are getting cheaper (along with DDR3 RAM) and therefore making a Core i7 system much more affordable. Consider checking out the new ASRock X58 Extreme ($158) if you are interested...

Everything but the RAM looks good. You are going to want DDR2-800 or 1066.

    I'm a fan of Corsair.

That CPU is a beast, and the Mobo is very nice.

Ive been saying this for a while now, but maybe hold off on a monster video card. The move to 40nm should be coming soon, along with nvidia and ATIs new cores. I hate to see you drop money on that very nice card only to have the next breed be around the corner.

the one in my area does sell D0

its been a while since the new step was released so there's a big chance they all are.

if there's a microcenter in your area, just verify,... you can call them and ask.
its written in the box's UPC

    S-Spec:
    SLBCH = C0, old one
    SLBEJ = D0, new one

Fudge me. It's not the D0 one. So I shouldn't get it? Or the price savings is worth it?

how did you know? you called?
they probably have a mix of C0s and D0s and the rep just grabbed a C0 by chance
maybe drive by and ask nicely for the rep to look for the specific S-spec. :dunno:

I called. Lady who answered knew exactly what I was talking about. so I'm assuming they're all the same variety and thats why they are cheap.

    that sucks :hs:
checkout the slickdeals forum. a lot of folks there are getting D0s (depends on the micro center branch i guess)
i forgot what page,... but i remember seeing some advice on how to get D0s (e.g. when to call when they restock, something like that)
    http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1423019

C0 is fine, but D0 is just better (for overclocking)

Ok, if I were to go with an i7 build, is this all I should change?

    Motherboard ASRock X58 Extreme
    CPU Intel i7 920 Nehalem http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115202
    RAM Patriot Viper 4gb (2x2GB) DDR32000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220344
    GPU EVGA GTX260 896mb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130434

:dunno: if that's the type of RAM I should be using. It's the same type of RAM anandtech used on their benchmark's for the ASRock x58.

Should I maybe go cheaper on the GPU? I would probably like to go SLI at some point, not quite sure if it's better to go with Nvidia or ATI on that one though.

Youre going to want to go triple channel DDR3 memory.

    checkout this combo deal
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.213960

    $828.97 - $30 rebate
all you need is a PSU, a cooler (checkout Xigmatek S1283) if you are overclocking

it would probably just around a $100 over the C2Q build

There is no need to buy ram that expensive. Nothing over 1333MHz stuff shows any real improvement.

and i just want to make sure you understand that socket LGA775 (C2Q and P45) is on its last legs

next intel cpu/mobos will be LGA1366 (high end i7/i9 and X58) and LGA1156 (low end i7/i5 and P55)

DDR2 as well, since the new ones use DDR3
