I have downloaded some videos that end in .rar but I can not get them to play. Quicktime says that they are not movie files and it will not even allow me to use VLC to open them. What can I use to play these videos?

    RAR files are compressed files.
StuffIt should be able to handle them or get UnRarX (google it)

no rar support in os x. you have to download something else to uncompress.

MacPAR deLuxe works great and repairs using PAR files. It's what I primarily use. RAR Expander is much faster as it doesn't waste time checking PAR files but if the RARs are damaged it cannot repair using the PAR files so I only use it if I'm around to make sure it completes without error. MacPAR deluxe I can queue up several files to expand and forget about it.

I just forget these things as they're such a quick fix.
I using unrarx on os x right now and I like it. It's light and does what I need.

I use to use Unrarx but found that RAR Expander is MUCH faster. Give it a try (it's free and open source).

I use stuffit, but from the sounds of it there are better options... I might try switching...

I like teh sound of MacPAR deluxe and being able to unRAR more than one file at a time...

StuffIt sucks. If it wasn't for the fact that I get about one file every couple months that is in that POS .sit format I wouldn't even have it on my machines. Apple was right when they pulled it from the factory OS install (partly due to a big falling out between them and Jobs is the word I've heard).
