Over the last few days I've grown immensely tired of LTO bullshit. At present I'm considering revamping my entire Time Line here on Benning to include Airborne, CLS and Mech Leaders then getting the heck off this post.

How important and useful is Ranger Training in the "real Army?" It seems to be more of a "don't-fuck-with-me" sort of tab/school. The 11th IN Regt makes a rather big deal about it, and that if you aren't Ranger Qualified you are shit.

I need some input from those who've more time in service than my pithy one year.

The Ranger tab is the payoff for hard work and the pride you have when wearing it. If that means nothing to you GTFO.

    That I do understand.

As for the promotion points, not really a concern as an Officer.

Anything to further your career, you should do. This means take any class offered to you.

because if it comes down to 2 exact same people with the same scores, and evaluations etc and 1 has a school and the other doesn't guess who's gonna get the promotion and who's going to get passed over....and it'll probably happen a few times

Once you turn down a class, you might not get another for a while.

I went to Airborne with an Infantry captain that broke his leg during Airborne as an LT and decided to skip the rest of his schools and just get to his duty station. He said initial impression were rough, but after a couple months people will respect you regardless of whats on your chest if you know your job. But I would love a Ranger slot, so it'll piss off the rest of us who don't get one handed to them.

If I were to turn it down, than I would be able to attend Ranger when I return to Benning for the MCCC (Maneuver Captains Career Course).

    Choices....choices....

    Interesting assumption.

What does being tired of LTO bullshit have to do with Ranger school. You won't have to deal with any of that stuff with in school. Why would you wait?

I wrongly assumed you were keen to the politics involved.

For Infantry officers I think Ranger school is important to have later in the career as promotions become more competitive. As a LT or Cpt. I don't think it would make much difference, but for Maj. on up it's helpful. It is a leadership course so it definitely isn't going to hurt your career. I say do it, then volunteer to go to the 75th so you can be a real Ranger and not just a school Ranger. :big grin:

don't do it man. Your gonna get alot of shit when you get to your unit. You'll probably be the only non tabbed INF LT around your battalion, so you can imagine how well that will go over. Seriously, if you didn't want to go, why not have chosen a different branch.

Why would you want to be an infantry officer if you didn't want to go to Ranger?

thats what i don't understand. Everyone I know that got INF instantly knew they'd have to start getting mentally and physically ready for ranger. Just suck it up, I know Benning sucks brother. Sill aint much better. You'll be better for it when you get to your unit.

I had this happen recently. Myself and another guy have been in the same amount of time, both been to Iraq, both had great EPRs, both of us had a lot of college. Small differences in that he had BTZ and I had an achievment medal. I got the position because I interviewed better. If either of us had a leg up in the training department that person would have won and gotten the job at MOC.

If you serve in a Ranger Bat, then it's meaningful. If you go to the school, got the tab and then went on to some other assignment, then who the fuck cares. You're a tab ranger. Might as well be a five jump chump as well.
